Contemporary Métis – People Who Own Themselves

Traditional Métis values, beliefs, and cultural practices have been passed on for generations. Although many modern Métis have adapted their lifestyle to accommodate changing circumstances, (such as learning new technologies or acquiring different skills) many still hold true to our historic culture, traditions, symbols, and core values.

Today, Métis organizations and communities across Canada are working toward implementing our inherent right to self-government and reconciliation with Canada. Obtaining and upholding the freedom to be ourselves, to identify as Métis, and to decide our future is an ongoing vision for modern Métis.

Métis leaders, organizations and governments have developed initiatives in many areas from education, justice, child and family services and healthcare to support our people in contemporary society.

“My people will sleep for 100 years, but when they awake, it will be the artists who give them their spirit back.”

Louis Riel
